Forte dei Marmi, a famous holiday resort in Versilia, derives its name from the fortress that rises in the center of the town, the 'Fortino', that is the grand-ducal fortress built at the end of the 18th century to defend the landing place and the marbles from the Alps Apuane, not far away, were transported to the pier and then took the sea route. 'Il Fortino' today is immersed in a modern urban context consisting of a grid of tree-lined streets that gives the city a worldly and restful aspect; The interior is also interesting, where the Museum of Political Satire and Caricature is located on the upper floor, one of the most important museums of its kind in the world. Next to "Il Fortino", in Piazza Garibaldi, there is a well dating back to the eighteenth century.

In correspondence with this fortress, there is the wharf, which was used to load large blocks of marble into the ships leaving for all over the world. Today it is a tourist destination, a place for fishing and diving: from the jetty you can enjoy an overall view of the Forte beach and the truly unique setting of the Apuan Alps, which are about 20 km from the city. They are mountains that rise up to almost 1900 meters. The marble makes them white as if they were always covered with snow, creating an unusual and spectacular contrast with the green of the landscape and with the golden beaches.

Forte dei Marmi beach is entirely made up of very fine sand and extends for about 150 meters; it is flanked by the buildings that overlook the long tree-lined avenue to the sea.

Do not forget that Versilia is also the home of the famous Viareggio carnival. There are many places to visit in the immediate vicinity such as the town of Pietrasanta with its shops, exhibitions and bars where you can taste the typical local gastronomy. A destination for speleological visits is the Antro del Corchia (one of the most important karst caves in Europe). As well as visits to the birthplace of Giosuè Carducci in Valdicastello, to the Resistance Museum of S.Anna, to the natural oasis LIPU at the lake of Massaciuccoli are recommended, without forgetting the world famous Carrara marble quarries, all while enjoying the numerous typical products of our area.

For lovers of sporting holidays it is possible to go trekking on the numerous paths of the Apuan Alps, to make long routes by bicycle or on horseback or to attend the various sports clubs in the area, to practice golf in the prestigious "Versilia golf club" with 18 holes or to play tennis.
